Our Worst Habit

Over the weekend, I started going around our house identifying problem areas that need solutions. It seems that no matter how much I clean or tidy, certain things keep bugging me on a day-to-day basis. One such area is our bedroom, or more specifically the clothes on our floor in our bedroom! Both J and I are so tired at the end of the day that we just drop our clothes right where we take them off before falling into bed. In such a small room, it's an instant mess!

Truth be told, we have had this problem for a long time. A few years ago, I thought the solution might be a valet stand. The idea is that instead of throwing your clothes on the floor, you hang them up on a stand. I got this one from IKEA and figured it was a low-risk investment to try out. Once everything was on there, it looked much nicer than a pile on the floor and I was happy.

But, over the coming days, I was startled every time I walked into our bedroom! The valet stand looked like some ominous figure standing in the room and it really freaked me out. I thought I would get over it, but I didn't! The other issue, I discovered, was getting the clothes off of the valet stand. After a week or so, it was piled with clothes. It didn't look much neater than the pile on the floor. It was just raised in the air! Total fail.

The next solution was a large canvas hamper. We got a nice one from The Laundress, but I wouldn't buy it again because it collapses and loses its shape and looks messy. Exactly what we're trying to avoid! So now I'm on the hunt for an attractive and functional hamper. I absolutely love the dotted chambray one above, and you can never go wrong with stripes! Which would you choose? How do you keep your laundry under control?

  1. I feel your pain! We bought this one (https://www.amazon.com/Double-Sorting-Bamboo-Laundry-Hamper/dp/B0137VSYK6/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1466571029&sr=8-7&keywords=Hamper+double) from Amazon. We use one side for "normal" clothes and the other for hand wash. It's helped us tremendously! It's great looking in person, too... Neutral and modern (if that's even a thing with hampers!). Good luck!

    1. Oh, yes, modern and neutral are a thing! I can't stand having ugly stuff around. It's a total curse!! ;)

    2. PS - Love your sorting method. I've always sorted by color. That is actually much smarter.

  2. I'm impressed that you managed to pinpoint one bad habit! Yes we have the clothes on the floor issue, but in bedrooms, bathrooms, arms of couches, friggin everywhere! :) But the entrance is my most hated bit... where shoes and hats and jackets and other paraphernalia gets thrown off. It should all theoretically work, but it never does!

    1. HA! Actually, your comment made me realize that our problem is so much more widespread than this, so today I proposed a 30-Day Clear Out Challenge. It's time to dive in and declutter!!! What do you think? ;)

  4. Would love to know what solution you ultimately find for this bad habit. I also suffer from this problem.

  5. Totally feel you. We have a small walk-in closet and with that extra space for clothes, we opted not to have a dresser in our room. We keep the hamper in the closet, so all of our clothes either wind up in the hamper or back on the racks on a good day, or on the closet floor on those days when we're too wiped to care. When that happens a few days in a row, the closet door stays closed. ;)

    1. Clever! I love that you can just close the door on the mess. Genius!

  6. I like your approach of looking for the root of the problem. I struggled with clothes organization for a long time before I realized I didn't have space for my clean clothes. Yes, they all fit, crammed in the drawers, but it was a chore to fold and put laundry away. I marie-kondoed my wardrobe and ended up swapping my vintage dresser with hard to open drawers for a larger IKEA one. It has helped tremendously. For my laundry, I have a canvas basket that collapses but that doesn't bother me too much.
