On Learning German

When I think of the possibility of moving back to Zurich, one thing that makes me absolutely cringe is the prospect of learning German. It is a very difficult language and deciding to learn it would take considerable much time and effort. But, then I see words these and I'm inspired at the thought of attaining that level of expression in German and using them. 1. I have to say I am so surprised! I assumed living there for so long that you spoke German. It's really not so hard to learn! Just have to get out of your comfort zone ☺ German is so absolutely logical (although I don't know Schwiizerdütsch)

    1. So, technically, I can speak a lot of German. But it's VERY BAD German and embarrassing. ;) I'm fully functional in French, so the urgency to learn German was diminished as French is one of the national languages and I could "pressez le trois pour le Français" or subscribe to email lists or get official docs in French. But learning actual German would be a must if we were to ever go back!

  2. I feel the same way about learning Danish, my husband's native language. It's just so hard....and usually pick up languages pretty quickly.

  3. UUGH!! This is one of the things we dread too! Isaiah has quite the memory so was able to remember a lot of nouns, and I am the risk-taker so I wasn't afraid to string some words together and give it a go. He would listen to the speaker and tell me any words I missed, and I would attempt a response. At least J can speak German! I like Kopfkino -- do it all the time!

    1. Cheers to being a risk-taker! I like Kopfkino, too. My head films are typically fueled by anxiety, though. HAHA! ;)

  4. We have been here 3 years and I just (finally!) had my first dream in German. :) Someone was serving something and I said, "Genuss genug". Thing is, I've never said those words in my life, and had no idea what they meant until I looked it up on Google Translate. If you find yourselves back in Switzerland, apparently simple language osmosis might get you there in the end! Ha!
